How do weeds grow?
Weeds are spread usually through the wind as their seeds are carried from spot to spot to germinate. When they land on your soil, they invade your grass and plants. If you live in Anne Arundel County, here are a few common weeds in our area:
Nutsedge
Nutsedge is notorious for standing out like a sore thumb, growing significantly taller than the usual grass and sprouting very quickly. The triangular-shaped blades of Nutsedge are frequently bright green and easy to spot. Since Nutsedge is technically a type of grass and not a weed, typical weed control tactics and products may not always combat the problem. Nutsedge usually has to be treated once it’s emerged with a custom product.
Dandelion
The cute little Dandelion is actually a weed and very common in Mayland. Dandelions are perennial weeds found on almost every property in Annapolis and spread seeds prolifically. A single Dandelion plant may produce hundreds of seeds and cover several acres. The flowers of the Dandelion are vivid yellow, and when dried, they transform into white balls of fluff that readily fly in the breeze. The breeze carries them from yard to yard, and this is how Dandelions germinate. Dandelions will not grow if you apply pre-emergents in the fall or early spring. Keeping a thick and lush lawn is the best defense against Dandelions.

Crabgrass
Crabgrass is a hardy weed that proliferates and can spread rapidly. A single crabgrass plant may produce 150,000 seeds during the growing season, making it difficult to control. Crabgrass will take over an entire lawn and eliminate the existing grass, causing erosion problems in the winter when it dies off if left unchecked. Crabgrass, left unchecked, will overtake an entire lawn, killing off the grass and causing yard drainage problems when it dies. Crabgrass will return every year and germinate in the spring and summer months. Although this pesky weed is tough to get rid of once it has sprouted, specialized treatments are available to knock them out.
Clover
Crimson and clover… over and over. Yep, most Annapolis properties have green Clover patches present in them. All Clover varieties have three (4 if you’re lucky) round leaflets at the end of a long stem, although there are numerous types. The flowers on this type of weed are round pink or white buds. Your soil is most likely lacking nitrogen if you see clovers.
Thistle
Thistle is a perennial weed with sharp, pricking leaves and (occasionally) lilac-pink blooms. This plant spreads rapidly via its aggressive root system and the ability to distribute thousands of seeds in a short amount of time.
Chickweed
Chickweed is a common weed that is easy to identify. If you look closely at Chickweed, you’ll see that each flower has five petals. But the petals of the blossom appear to have ten petals due to the thick lobe on each. It’s important to be careful when pulling this weed from your yard due to its shallow root system. Chickweed will usually die off on its own. Because traditional weed control methods are less effective during the cooler months, it’s best to let this plant go dormant and eventually dissolve after the first few cuts of the year.
