Lawn care is an essential part of proper yard maintenance, but many people neglect it, especially lack of time. However, when you factor in all the benefits of mowing your lawn or having someone else do so – like reduced gas costs and increased property value- throwing some money at this task might cost you more in the long term! Let’s take a look at some of the benefits of mowing the lawn on a regular basis.

Mowing the lawn serves a couple of purposes. First, the aesthetic benefits are immediate. Cutting the grass is a great way to keep it neat and even. You will have a nicely manicured yard to add value to your home and other benefits like reducing grasses that could lead to weeds or disease due to weather conditions! Plus, weekly lawn mowing helps maintain its fresh appearance, which brings lots of satisfaction and pride with property ownership.

Mowing the lawn is an essential part of keeping your grass healthy and eliminating pests simultaneously. The weekly mows help pick up any debris that may accumulate, which keeps everything looking nice for you!

What are some other benefits of mowing the lawn?

Regular lawn mowing services will keep your yard healthy and beautiful. By providing equal distribution to the areas mowed, you can get a consistent look without worrying about uneven spots or patches that might fade quickly due to a lack of nutrients. Where is the lack of nutrients found? For example, heavy clay soil types can be highly compacted and lack nutrients. Weeds also create a lack of nutrients if left unchecked.

The healthiest and strongest shoots grow back after each cut when you mow your lawn. These hardy plants can flourish because they’re getting reinforced with fresh nutrients from surrounding soil recently fertilized by all those beautiful green leaves we shed into it over time!

Grasses are natural fertilizers for lawns and gardens. The fallen grass shoots can be used as a soil supplement, especially when bagged before being laid out on the ground to compost over time! Mowing helps keep everything fresh by returning some debris into our planet’s belly (or so they say).

A few things to remember if you decide to mow your lawn:

  • Keep Your Lawn Mowing Blade High
  • Mow Your Yard When It’s Dry, Not Wet
  • Switch Up Your Lawn Mowing PatternVary Your Mowing Pattern
  • A Lawn Mowing Set Day Of The Week Isn’t Necessary
  • Hold On A Minute Before Mowing A New Lawn
  • Leave Your Grass Clippings Where They Lie
  • Keep Your Lawn Mower Blade Nice and Sharp

Ah, springtime. The cold, dreary winter snow is melting, the birds are chirping their hearts out, and spring flowers are starting to bloom. It’s time for spring yard cleanup! This year, don’t let the unpredictable weather catch you by surprise. We decided to give you a little bit of advice to help you prepare your lawn and garden for the growing season with our spring yard cleanup checklist. Use this blog Spring Yard Cleanup Checklist: Lawncare, Gardening, and More, to help get your yard summer-ready or contact us today to do all of your dirty work! This blog post will discuss six essential categories to help your yard ready for gardening.

General Yard Cleanup

Grab some heavy-duty gloves and get going. You’ll first need to remove leaves, branches, and twigs built up over the winter before mowing the lawn. Getting leaves and trash off of grass is essential for the grass to breathe. A thorough spring cleaning prepares the ground for new mulch and yearly flowers. If you were diligent about thoroughly raking your leaves in the fall, you most likely avoided “snow mold.” However, there will always be some stray leaves to rake, and raking helps prevent thatch accumulation on lawns.

Tip: When raking the lawn, be sure to sweep up pinecones or limbs. Pinecones need to be shredded because this helps them break down more readily in a compost bin.

Trees and Shrubs Cutbacks

Remove dead and decaying branches. It’s good to prune back to living stems on both trees and shrubs. Pruning helps to get rid of branches that have been harmed by the cold, snow, and wind. However, there is a “best time” to prune living stems and branches. As a result of pruning too soon, things can go wrong with the blooming pattern.

If you have lawn care questions or need landscaping help, reach out to us for more information or schedule a free consultation.

Perennials and Grass Cutbacks

Perennials need to be cut back and divided on an as-needed basis. Regular pruning helps your yard look tidy. Additionally, pruning these plants also helps the other plants and bushes from suffocating.

Edging and Cleanup Around Plant Beds

While it may be stating the obvious, it’s time to rake out dead leaves and foliage (which may smother plants and promote illness), remove spent annuals, and fill a wheelbarrow with additional organic yard waste once the spring yard cleanup is complete. Remove any existing mulch once the danger of frost has passed to set up for a new layer when you are ready to plant in the spring. Deep edging around flower beds and tree trunks is similar to framing landscaped areas.

Shapers and spades are tools that make clear borders between your turf and flower beds. This type of edging is done before pre-emergent, and fresh mulch is applied.

Grass, bushes, and vines can be snagged and pulled from a landscaped bed. A manicured edge will keep grass and weeds from encroaching on your garden. It also makes mowing along flower bed edges much more manageable, resulting in less risk of harm.

Prep Yard for Spring Seeding

Nex up on our Spring Yard Cleanup Checklist is prepping your yard for seeding! Grass will germinate in April, but testing the soil’s pH early in the spring is brilliant since it allows you to mix the right seeding formula for our yard. To prepare for seeding that will take place in a few weeks, remove salt-damaged turf, plows, or diseases. Mulch can also make a world of difference to a tired winter yard. Spring is the best time to add a new layer of mulch.

Tip: It can help control weed germination and growth, keeping soil wetter and cooler as temperatures rise. During the summer heat, this is quite important.

Cleanup Hardscapes and Patios

Rake gravel back into walkways and patios from winter storm damage. Use a pressure washer with a low-pressure nozzle to remove slippery algae spots or leaf marks from patios and pathways. Sweep in fresh sand or stone dust to refill joints between flagstones; water the area with a hose, then repeat.

Maintaining your landscape adds to the value of your home, but it also provides a secure outside environment for everyone who visits, works, and lives on it. Mowing the lawn is one of those chores that you either love or don’t love. It needs to be done regularly if you want your yard to look its best. How often you need to cut the grass on your property will depend on a few factors, including the type of grass you have, the time of year, and how much rainfall your area receives. This blog post will provide a few simple guidelines for how often to mow the lawn in Annapolis, Maryland. So, how often should I mow the lawn?

Mowing your grass is an essential task of keeping it looking healthy and happy. Consistency is key. There are several variables to consider when determining how often you should cut your grass.

How Much Should I Cut

The most crucial thing to note when mowing is that the phrase “how often” isn’t nearly as significant as “how much” grass you cut. Brown patches, weak roots, and scorched grass can result from misdirected clipping. Below we have outlined some tips and points to consider when asking “How often to mow the lawn” in Annapolis, MD?

The lawn care experts at Paradise Landscape and Hardscapes recommend never removing more than a third of the grass’ length in a single pass. It is more likely to brown when you remove too much grass at once. This problem happens when the grass is long, the lower portion is shadowed, and nearly white. If cut too short, the delicate part of the grass blade is subjected to direct sunshine and scorches quickly.

Desired Length

When a lot of grass is cut all at once, it might be smothered or develop mold. The newly cut grass surface will accumulate on the cutting blades, stunting its development. Weeds are more likely to grow when the grass is stressed or burned. Remember, different grasses require varying lengths for optimal growth. If you mow your grass correctly, you can keep it for a more extended period or trim it shorter.

Longer Grass Means a Better Root System

Cutting the grass too short can result in shallow root systems. Longer grass is more drought and disease resistant.

For Longer Grass:

Because the roots of the blade will be firmly entrenched and grow deeper, longer grass is easier to keep up. Make careful not to allow the grass to get too long. If you mow more often during the grass growing season in Annapolis and adhere to a plan, your grass will be long and lush all season! If you’re unable to cut on schedule, don’t chop more than a third off of the length in one go. While lowering the mowers blades gradually to get it back to its ideal height, mow

For Shorter Grass:

If you want to keep your lawn trim, you’ll need to do some extra preparation. Mowing grass frequently is required for short grass since it grows quickly. It is critical to gradually remove the length so your grass does not go into shock or catch fire. Even if you follow all of these procedures, grass cut TOO short is ineffective. It can cause weak roots and bare patches as a result of over-fertilizing. If you accidentally trim your grass too short, water and

Common Maryland Grass Types:

Tall Fescue:

If you want a long-lasting green lawn, this cool-season grass is the ideal choice. It becomes green in early spring and typically lasts until late fall compared to other grasses. Tall Fescue is a turf variety grass that is highly robust and can endure a lot of foot traffic. Most fescues are perennial and do not require replanting. On the other hand, Tall Fescue is a biennial that grows in sprays or clusters. It’s susceptible to diseases and can survive winter temperatures as low as -40 degrees Fahrenheit but thrives in mild summers with average rainfall. Tall Fescue makes an excellent choice for a variety that may thrive in almost any soil type. As a result, this grass grows most during the spring and fall seasons when it’s also gaining height. Tall Fescue requires 25% less water than Zoysia grass to keep green on average.

Mowing Height: Tall Fescue grass should be kept between 2 to 3 inches tall.

Fine Fescue:

Does your yard have more share than the sun? If so, Fine Fescue would be the better choice since it tolerates shade better than other grass varieties. The leaves of this cool-season grass are tiny, and it develops fast. Fine Fescue is turf grass that performs well on a lawn. If taken care of correctly, good Fescue may last all year if it is drought-resistant. It doesn’t require much upkeep and isn’t necessary to fertilize it. Fine Fescue grass also does excellent in poor soil conditions. This type of grass restores dormant winter lawns if they haven’t been mowed or crushed.

Mowing Height: Fine Fescue grass does best when kept to 2 ½ and 3 ½ inches tall.

Kentucky Blue Grass:

Kentucky Bluegrass is a well-known, long-lived grass with the ability to grow in almost any condition. It has a beautiful lawn appearance and grows effectively in moist and dry soil conditions. Kentucky bluegrass, often called “Kentucky seeding grass,” is a cool-season grass thrives best in the Northern United States. Kentucky Bluegrass can tolerate long, cold winters and mild to hot summers. This type of grass thrives in a variety of soil types and prefers somewhat dry soil. During the summer, it requires extra care for shallow roots to stay moist.

Mowing Height: As a rule of thumb, Kentucky Bluegrass does best when you keep it around 2 to 2 ½ inches tall during the spring and fall compared to 3 to 4 inches during the summer.

Perennial Ryegrass:

This cool-season grass is popular, has a fast germination rate, and develops quickly. Ryegrass has excellent cold tolerance and can withstand heat and drought depending on the variety. The grass-type Perennial Ryegrass thrives in beautiful lawns that return year after year. It flourishes in the cooler months of fall to spring and performs well in the moderate Annapolis summers. This type of Ryegrass is one of the easiest species to grow since it takes only 1-2 months for seedlings to germinate. However, once planted, it spreads slowly.

Mowing Height: Perennial Ryegrass should be kept between 1 ½ to 2 ½ inches tall.

When to Mow

Mowing your grass regularly helps to keep it healthy and green. Depending on the sort of grass, you’ll want to trim it more often during the growing season, which lasts from spring through summer.

Pay attention to the weather so your mowing schedule remains in sync with rainfall. The growing season of ‘cold-weather’ grasses is in spring and fall. The mowing frequency is determined by how much water it gets. Factors that play a role here are the amount of water your yard gets and if you fertilize. This issue is crucial because it may harm your mower and leave bare patches when your lawn is wet.

What are some common problems caused by mowing your yard the wrong way?

If your freshly cut yard looks shabby after cutting it:

  • Scalping occurs when the blade setting on your mower is too low, exposing the crown and soil to excessive heat.
  • Dull mower blades might cause a tattered leaf or yellow color.
  • Before you mow your grass, make sure the leaf blade isn’t bleach-stained by letting it grow too long.

The best results for a healthy yard come from mowing your lawn with attentiveness and planning. Done correctly, you can achieve lush and beautiful grounds that look happy and healthy. At Paradise Landscape and Hardscapes, we know that mowing the yard is just one piece of the lawn care pie. Our experts also know Maryland’s soil common lawn problems and specialize in plant health care!

Contact us today as mowing season is right around the corner! We will get you scheduled for weekly grass cutting services in Annapolis so you can enjoy your summer!

When it comes to lawn mowing, you probably fall into one of two camps: love it or leave it. Some people love walking back and forth from one side of their property to the other 50-150 times. Others have a life to live, Netflix to watch, and burgers to flip on their grill. But when does lawn mowing season start in Annapolis, and what do you need to be aware of for the best lawn care? When Should I Start Mowing My Lawn?

It’s all about timing for lawn care services in Annapolis. However, a few crucial times and considerations to be aware of will change how lush and green your lawn looks.

So, when does lawn mowing season start in Annapolis? We’ve compiled the top 5 signs that lawn mowing season is upon us.

5 Signs Lawn Mowing Season Is Here

Springtime Has Sprung

Generally, once spring sets in and temperatures consistently stay above 40°, it’s time to start thinking about lawn mowing. That’s when you can go outside in a t-shirt without shaking like a leaf, which is the sign your lawn will start growing.

Magnolias, Nature’s Alarm Bell

This title might sound strange, but it makes sense. We love magnolias in our lawn care services in Annapolis- they’re everywhere, they’re beautiful, and they serve an extra purpose. Magnolias bloom when the soil is at a perfect growing stage. So when magnolias are blooming, they’re actually saying, “Hey, things are starting to grow again! It’s lawn mowing season!” Your lawn has woken up from its long winter nap, and it’s ready for you to start cutting.

Snowless, But Lotsa Leaves

Once the snow is gone, you might be able to see something else blanketing your lawn. If you didn’t get the chance to rake up those leaves before the snow fell, you’d want to get a start on lawn mowing pronto. These leaves block sunlight from the grass, keeping it from growing. Not to mention, that blanket of leaves can let the fungus grow and even kill your grass. So whip out your lawnmower and mulch those guys up, and you’ll get your grass kick-started on growing.

Weed It Out

Before you cut, you need to treat your lawn for weeds. Shorter grass allows weeds to snake their greedy tiny roots into your lawn. (Who knew lawn mowing was such a battlefield?) So in a way, lawn mowing season starts with weed care. By treating your lawn first, you guarantee a healthy carpet of green grass through the summer.

Overgrown Grass

If your grass was left longer than 3 inches in the fall before that first blanket of snow fell, it’s time to cut the top off. Leaving it too long can lead to matting that stunts growth. Mold can also grow, and no one wants that. Only remove the grass’s top third for the first cut. Lawn mowing like this gives your lawn more pep in its step and helps it perk back up faster.

Call In the Experts When Lawn Mowing Season Starts

“I want to light up my yard, but don’t know where to start.” Ah. How to design landscape lighting around your home. This is a common problem. Before you install landscape lighting, you need some way to plan it out. So if this is your first time, or you are looking for new ideas, read on! This article will explain how to design landscape lighting in 5 easy steps.

At night, landscape lighting adds all the drama, beauty, and appeal to your home exterior. Here are five steps for creating distinct, functional lighting designs. These are sure to make your property look its best when the sun goes down.

Step 1: Get Your Landscape Lighting Ideas on Paper

Select key focal points throughout the day and at night. Do you have a favorite oak tree in your yard? What about a tropical palm, or a magnificent group of juniper bushes? Are you lacking any kind of trees or plant focal areas? No problem. What about a hardscape features like a stone wall? How about a water feature or even a pool? These are all fantastic ideas that provide a sense of what to search for with landscape focal points.

These are the main visual features, and the first level of light in the landscape. Modern exterior lighting is a great complement to other parts of the landscape. These area include walkways through a garden, deck areas, porches, and driveways. Need some inspiration? Check out these amazing outdoor lighting projects!

Step 2: Mock Up Your Landscape Lighting Ideas

Can’t draw? No problem. Grab a legal bad and start sketching as basic as possible. Draw the perimeter of your yard. This will be pretty easy, right? It’s most likely a square or rectangle. Next, X off some areas that represent decks, benches, trees, shrubs or vegetation. Anything significance in your yard that you need to work with.

Highlight all of the key focal points identified in Step 1, as well as the approximate height and length of those items. Any existing landscape illumination should be drawn in. In the subsequent steps, you’ll have to decide between a 120V or 12V landscape lighting system.

Step 3: Choose Your Landscape Lighting Fixtures

Choosing the right fixtures for each designated location in your design is important. The two most important questions to consider are: What type of lighting system do you already have, if any? The other question is how big is your layout?

Do you have WAC Lighting for accent, flood, and in-ground landscaping fixtures? This can control color, beam width, and brightness levels.

This type of lighting manufactures 2 volts — 120V and 12V landscape systems. There are two construction options for WAC lighting. Those options are solid die cast brass and k-alloy aluminum. The choices are a cast-brass finish or a brushed steel one. Both choices finish in in bronze, with die cast solid brass available. This helps corrosion issues. We have a lot of these problems living around so much water in Annapolis. The next think you need to think about is a power source.

Landscape Lighting in Annapolis, Maryland

Power sources can be expensive and tedious. If your landscape already has a 120V system in place, or if the fixtures will be close to the house near an outdoor power outlet, then you are good to go. But, a low voltage 12V system the way to go. Why? It’s a centralized power source that is a lot easier (and cheaper) to deal with in the long run.

Step 4: Lighting Fixtures and Spacing

Spacing is somewhat subjective. In general, most landscape lighting products include 6 feet of lead wire. Keep that in mind when thinking about your grand plan.

Step 5: Power Supplies and Final Concept

The final stage is to bring your landscape lighting design to reality. If you chose a 12V low-voltage system most likely it will run from a single source and extend. Most transformers will connect into a regular receptacle outlet. Select the proper transformer size. You might need a little help here. In general, look for maximum wattage capacity ranging from 75 to 600 watts. This is based on the fixture runs and number of fixtures in your project. It’s a good idea to leave space for future growth so you can show off a tree or create a garden feature. Put a little thought into where you want to position your landscape lighting. This helps avoid wasting energy. Another way to save money is to include a timer on your lights. This will ensure that you landscape lights will switch on and off automatically.

When we think of summer we often think of long, lush grass.  And when we see that lawn in front of our house that hasn’t been mowed since early spring, we usually get a can of gas out to start the machine up. But when does lawn mowing season start in Annapolis? Is there a specific time of year for lawn mowing season in Maryland?

Yes. There is a time of year to start your spring landscape services in Maryland. But did you know there is also a right time and wrong time to mow your lawn in Maryland?

You’re beat. You’ve worked all day, and you still need to spend time with your family. Why do you want to mow your lawn in the evenings or on the weekends? Get your time and your yard back when you hire Paradise Landscape and Hardscape to mow your lawn. When does lawn mowing season start in Annapolis?

The short answer is SPRING. When your lawn has been prepped for weed control, and the temperatures remain above 40, it is time to start watching your lawn for growth. Typically, you can mow the lawn for the first time in the spring when your grass has grown to approximately 2-3″ in length.

When you hire our professional team to mow your grass regularly it will stay thick and green with no weeds popping up!

Why Hire a Professional Lawn Care Company to Mow Your Grass?

Life is so busy. Many of use these days work full-time and have children, leaving little time for themselves. You may now reclaim your weekends by hiring a professional lawn care business to trim your grass weekly. Learn more about our weekly grass cutting and lawn mowing services here.

Why hire a landscaping pro?

Here are five main reasons:

1) You’re swamped. Who wants to deal with children and mow the lawn during the week or on weekends? Have backyard parties instead of mowing your grass in the spring, summer, and fall evenings and weekends.

2) You get a professional mow that looks real slick. Your grass will be three to four inches taller than it was before since your local lawn service will just remove the top quarter to half of your grass. This inhibits weed germination and development. Longer lawn grass is considered good for your yard. It keeps the grassk thick and lush. This makes it amazing to walk on.

3) When your lawn is mowed, it should only be done with sharp blades. Dull blades scratch and rip at the grass, exposing it to insect devastation and disease. Each time a specialist from Team Paradise uses a sickle-style mower to cut your yard. This ensures a smooth cut.

4) Every time Paradise Landscapes & Hardscapes mows your grass, we will do so in different directions. Why do you mow the grass in different directions? We do this to keep the lawn looking groomed. It also helps to prevent one side from growing longer than the other.

5) We’ll also trim around areas where the mower couldn’t reach. Your lawn mowing expert from our team will trim your flowerbeds, trees, fences, gates, and sidewalks while you’re away at work. You’ll be happy when you get home after a long day to see a neatly trimmed lawn.
